About Trauma Therapy
Everyone will experience some type of trauma or extreme stress during their lifetime. Trauma may involve losses related to illness, death, divorce, or unemployment. Trauma is also tied to physical or emotional abuse or neglect, military service, or other dramatic changes.
Part of treating trauma is erasing the stigma of trauma. You are not weak for being affected by an event, even if that event may have different or less impact on others.
Trauma is present across many systems, and many people experience it in varying degrees every day. Trauma can show up as physical symptoms, ongoing issues in relationships, emotional or mental health struggles, or all the above.
What is EMDR?
Effective trauma therapy utilizes both a “top-down” and “bottom-up” approach. Because trauma affects areas of the brain that are not accessible to thought and reason, talk therapies alone are not sufficient. We must also use “bottom-up” therapies such as EMDR and evidenced-based mindfulness practices.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR) is a form of trauma-focused protocoled therapy specifically developed for reducing the power of traumatic memories. In EMDR therapy, I will guide you to think about a trauma while moving your eyes back and forth, left to right. Over time, this will help your brain reprocess the memories so that they no longer cause as much pain.
