Support is for everyone.

If your family member is struggling with addiction or mental health, so are you. Addiction, trauma, and mental health issues not only affect the individual, but they also deeply impact that individual’s family system. We work with parents, spouses, and relatives of individuals struggling with addiction and other issues affecting mental health through individual counseling and group therapy.

Our primary goals when working with family members are to:

  1. Provide valuable psychoeducation on addiction, trauma, and other mental health issues

  2. Educate family members on the difference between enabling and support so that family members can effectively learn how to support individuals in their recovery and not in their addiction or disorder

  3. Explore the impacts of these issues on the family system in order to initiate the process of healing and rebuilding relationships

How We Work With Family Members

Individual Counseling for Family Members

When it comes to addiction, family members are as negatively impacted as their addicted loved one. Through intensive individual sessions, we work closely with family members to educate and empower them to support their loved ones without unintentionally enabling their addiction to continue.

Family Support Groups

Family support groups provide safe platforms for family members and loved ones to share experiences and learn from each other under the guidance and support of a trained therapist. Family support groups can take place virtually or in-person as appropriate.

Interventions

Both Cynthia and Brian have extensive experience facilitating family-based interventions. All interventions include:

Preparation- This involves intensive educational sessions on the disease of addiction, an exploration of systemic family dynamics, educational on enabling v. support, and boundary setting. This preparatory phase is typically completed over a 3-5 day period and can be done in office, in-home, or virtually. We also have the ability to assist in coaching families through the processes of both Baker Acts or Marchman Acts as needed.

Intervention- An intervention is a orchestrated therapeutic process by a support systems – usually family and friends – to encourage an individual to seek professional help with an addiction, mental health issue, or some kind of traumatic event or crisis. Typically, the goal of an intervention is to support an individual into a structured residential program. Based on over thirty-years of combined experience, Cynthia and Brian are able to provide recommendations and referrals for treatment centers and providers throughout the State of Florida as well as nationally and internationally as appropriate.

Ongoing Care- After an intervention has been successfully completed, we will continue to work with family throughout the treatment episode and consult regarding ongoing care and recovery.
